Ask Journey: What software trend are we pumped for in 2020?

5G

Up 20 times faster network than 4G. 5G has begun a gradual roll-out across select locations in NZ, and is set to expand across the country in 2020. 5G, the fifth generation of wireless technology, will bring super-fast downloads, minimal latency, massive connectivity and outstanding reliability. It will open up huge possibilities for business and the way we live.

Here are 5 ways that 5G can impact your business.

1. Increase speeds

5G is incredibly up to 20 times faster than 4G. This means higher data rates (1-20 Gbit/s), enabling consumers to download content more quickly. Meaning a better customer experience through your online journey.

2. Less latency

5G will also have much lower latency. We’ll see much less delay or lag when we’re using our phones and other devices. With 4G networks, latency is typically around 40-50 milliseconds. With 5G it should be 1 millisecond or less, which is undetectable to the user. This will open doors for business and developers, particularly for creating new technologies such as AR and VR on a network that can provide a seamless experience for softwares that require heavy network power.

3. Reliability

This is especially helpful for industries that use robotics, like healthcare and manufacturing. A 5G network will be one you can depend on.

4. Greater Capacity

5G will have greater capacity, meaning the networks will be able to cope better with many high-demand applications all at once - from connected cars and IoT (Internet of Things) devices to virtual reality experiences and simultaneous HD video streaming. More connection points in a smaller area – along with using small cells and unlicensed spectrum – will improve capacity. That means a better customer experience on all softwares.

5. Mass Connectivity

Connect more devices to the network at the same time without a reduction in speed or quality (up to one million devices per square kilometre on a continual basis).
